The course

This qualification will develop the knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in the Health, Social Care and Childrens and Young Peoples sectors.

This qualification:

Aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding of these settings before deciding whether working in the sector is for them.

Allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression in the sectors.

Allows learners to tailor their learning to their interests through the provision of a broad range of optional units.

Provides opportunities for the development of transferable skills.

Supports progression to Level 2 qualifications in health, social care or children's settings.

Provides learners with the opportunity to progress to employment, in due course, in a range of job roles in the care sectors.

Course Information

  • This qualification provides you with an introductory knowledge of working in health, social care and children and young peoples settings. You will gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas within health, social care and children and young peoples settings:
  • principles and values
  • service provision and roles
  • protection and safeguarding
  • equality and inclusion
  • communication
  • health and safety
  • person-centered approaches.
  • Additional units include:
  • investigating a vocational area
  • understanding risk
  • introductory awareness of bereavement
  • job opportunities
  • duty of care
  • human growth and development
  • introduction to autistic spectrum condition
  • introduction to mental health
  • working with others
  • healthy lifestyle.
  • To complete the diploma learners must achieve a minimum of 37 credits, credits per unit vary, however below gives you some of the unit examples:
  • Understand the Range of Service Provision and Roles Within Health and Social Care.
  • Introductory Awareness of Person-Centered Support in Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings .
  • Understand the Principles and Values in Health and Social Care (Adults and Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare.
  • Introductory Awareness of Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings.
  • Awareness of Protection and Safeguarding in Health and Social Care (Adults and Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare.
  • Introduction to Communication in Health and Social Care (Adults and Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare.
  • Introductory Awareness of Health and Safety in Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings.

To apply for this course you will need to have at least two subjects at Grade 2 or above.

College staff will be able to discuss this further with you.

College attendance is 3 or 4 days per week dependent on Maths and English requirements. (This will be discussed with you at interview).

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board. The qualifications will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria for the chosen units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass.
On completing the qualifications, learners who wish to pursue a career can progress to other level 2 qualifications such as the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce or the Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care.
This course is suitable for anyone considering a career in health and/or social care with adults or children and young people.
