The Course
As an apprentice you will have a job and a wage whilst building up knowledge and skills within the horticulture industry. This apprenticeship standard at Level 2 will prepare you for work as a horticulture and landscape operative and comprises of an end point assessment and Functional Skills (English and Maths).

- Principles of plant growth and development
- Plant nutrition requirements
- Ways to reduce waste
- How to use equipment correctly
- Cultivating soils for differing purposes
- Controlling plant pests and diseases
- Identifying plants.
Duration
This apprenticeship usually takes between 18 and 24 months to complete.

Careers
Work as a landscape gardener, planning and maintaining large gardens, parks and green spaces, garden centres etc.

Entry Requirements
You must have GCSE English and Maths at grade D or 3 or equivalent. You must also pass an initial assessment, secure work within horticulture and landscaping as an apprentice and have one satisfactory reference.

Brett had a number of jobs after completing his GCSEs, including agency and factory work, but decided he wanted to improve his career prospects by studying horticulture at Riseholme College.
Q: What do you like about Riseholme College?
A: The staff and pupils are all very friendly and the teachers provide excellent support. They are always prepared to help and provide further information on topics.
Q: What is the best thing about your course?
A: The course is enabling me to improve my practical gardening skills and theoretical knowledge. The combination of work-based assessments and days at College are very conducive to learning.
Q: What are your hopes for the future?
A: I hope to improve my horticultural knowledge and become a better and more confident gardener. In the future I hope to be a head gardener at a stately home.
