This is an introductory-level course that is designed to allow students interested in a career in the horticulture sector to develop the confidence and skills they will need whilst studying. It makes the best possible use of the college’s outstanding facilities.
One year full-time, normally in college three days a week.
Students can progress on to the City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Qualifications in Horticulture.
- Care for planted area
- Prepare soil and apply organic mulch
- Prepare and plant a hanging basket
- Identify weeds
- Work-related experience
- English and Maths, as required.

Brett had a number of jobs after completing his GCSEs, including agency and factory work, but decided he wanted to improve his career prospects by studying horticulture at Riseholme College.

A: The staff and pupils are all very friendly and the teachers provide excellent support. They are always prepared to help and provide further information on topics.
Q: What is the best thing about your course?
A: The course is enabling me to improve my practical gardening skills and theoretical knowledge. The combination of work-based assessments and days at College are very conducive to learning.
Q: What are your hopes for the future?
A: I hope to improve my horticultural knowledge and become a better and more confident gardener. In the future I hope to be a head gardener at a stately home.
