Apprentice Gardener

Kettlethorpe Sports Horses Ltd, Kettlethorpe (between Lincoln & Gainsborough)

The Role

  • Apprenticeship working with and learning from highly experienced gardener ·
  • Working in beautiful landscaped garden at Kettlethorpe Hall and charming adjacent cottage garden ·
  • Managing landscape and maintaining grounds of eventing/livery yard, fields, cross country course and arenas
  • Learning to use variety of horticultural tools and vehicles, including mowing machines, tractors, harrows, cutters, strimmers and saws ·
  • Acquiring knowledge of and tending wide variety of plants ·
  • Acquiring knowledge of care of lawns and paths ·
  • Acquiring knowledge of care of grounds and fields used by horses ·
  • Acquiring knowledge of care and maintenance of ponds/aquatic plants

Desired skills

  • Candidates should have basic literacy and numeracy skills enabling them to follow instructions and communicate clearly ·
  • Candidates should be physically fit for outdoor work · ·
  • Candidates should be comfortable in the presence of animals (dogs/horses) although no experience is required ·
  • Candidates should have the ability, when clearly instructed, to work independently and consistently without the need for close supervision ·
  • Candidates should be happy to use/handle machinery, although full training will be given and no previous experience is required ·
  • The successful candidate will be organised, safety-conscious and have good attention to detail

Personal qualities

  • Candidates must be punctual, responsible, discreet and reliable ·
  • The vacancy is based in a small team and candidates will be expected to work using their own initiative ·
  • Candidates must be dedicated to completing the apprenticeship qualifications ·
  • We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who likes working outdoors

Desired qualifications

  • No qualifications required as full training will be given but candidate should have basic literacy and numeracy skills and be able to complete the Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

  • Candidates must provide a reference from a non-family member with whom KSH can be in contact, eg a teacher or someone they have worked for.
